MANCHESTER, N.H. - New England's smallest and flattest state produced some big time performances on the punishing hills of Derryfield Park on Saturday at the New England Cross Championships. The first three finishers in the boy's 5-kilometer race were Rhode Islanders. Mark Feigen, an East Greenwich senior, nipped Westerly's Andrew Springer, also a senior, to capture the coveted New England crown. Feigen posted a time of 15:47.1, less than second ahead of Springer. In third place was junior Nick Ross, also of East Greenwich, who crossed the finish line in 15:50. Another Rhode Islander, Connor Mercurio, of LaSalle Academy, was 6th, in 15:56. The top three boys teams from Rhode Island were Bishop Hendricken, 9th with 294 points, last weekend's State Champions; Chariho, 11th, 367 points; and Barrington, 13th, 387 points.
Rhode Island 800M champion, Mark Feigan of East Greenwich high school proved today that he is very capable of running cross country too. Feigan’s 800M speed proved very useful at the finish of today’s race where Rhode Island runners dominated today’s New England boys high school championship race like never before. In a reversal of last weeks Rhode Island state championship where Westerly’s Andrew Springer set a course record, Feigan switched positions with Springer. Nick Ross also from the small school of East Greenwich bounced back to form from last week’s state championship to take a solid 3rd place today. Ross will be back next year to keep the Rhode Island streak going as he is a junior. In addition Conner Mercurio of La Salle took 6th place in 15:56.6 In the women's race, Jenna Riley was first home for Rhode Island in 15th position in a time of 18:58.6 New England Cross Country Boys High School Results 1 Mark Feigen 12 RI-East Gree 15:47.1 2 Andrew Springer 12 RI-Westerly 15:48.3 3 Nick Ross 11 RI-East Gree 15:50.0
